Possible Warning Signs of Suicide
As young as our students are a few of them are already showing signs
of depression and stress. Below you will find several possible warning
signs of suicide:
Planning, talking or thinking about suicide
Signs of DEPRESSION: unable to sleep or sleeping all the time, loss of energy, change in appetite
Persistent feelings fo being overwhelmed, ANGRY or pessimistic
Increased SUBSTANCE use and/or RISKY BEHAVIOR
Recent grief or loss
Drastic CHANGES in appearance, mood, attitude, behavior or school performance
Giving away treasured possessions
Presious suicide attempts or attempts to harm oneself
A feeling of HOPELESSNESS or loneliness
WHATYOU CAN DO
1. Show you Care - Listen carefully-Be genuine. Don't judge, lecture, put down or joke.
2. Ask the Question - Be direct but caring and non-confrontational.
Take all talk of suicide seriously. "Are you thinking about suicide?"
3. Get Help - Do not leave hin/her alone. Talk with a trusted adult
(counselor, teacher, parent or religious leader). Call the crisis
hotline 1-800-273-TALK. "You are not alone. Let me help you."
